DVD/Blu-ray Release: Free Willy 4: Escape From Pirate’s Cove
The film’s young star, Bindi Irwin, was at the Toronto Zoo last month for a screening of the film for a school group, and you can read about that event (which included a brief Q & A) here.
Briefly, my thoughts/a synopsis of the film, are that it will be fun for market it’s intended, (around 6-12), and is well-enough acted by young Bindi Irwin. In the film she plays Kirra, an Australian 11-year-old who leaves to go spend the summer with her grandfather (played by Beau Bridges) in South Africa. She finds a baby Orca in the lagoon near his run-down amusement park, and names it Willy. [When questioned why the name Willy, I think they should have made a mention about naming him after ‘those films from the ‘90’s’...]
It’s clearly following basically the same storyline as the first three Free Willy movies, when her grandfather wants to sell the whale to another amusement park owner for money, and Kirra goes on a quest to return Willy to the ocean. The difference is this time it’s taking place in South Africa with new characters. For those of us who remember the first three, this won’t stand up the same way, without any of the same suspense felt in those ones, but to newcomers to the franchise, it’s a fine place to start.
The DVD includes exclusive to Blu-Ray extras, including:
• On the set of Free Willy: Greetings from South Africa
• Bindi Irwin and Willy invite all to “Meet My Wild Co-stars”
• Bindi’s first movie video diary
• Deleted Scenes
Free Willy 4: Escape From Pirate’s Cove is 101 minutes, and is rated PG.
